BeetleCam turns 10!

Posted by Will on

This month it is ten years since I finished building the first BeetleCam. At the time, I had no idea how much BeetleCam would go on to shape my career. This was the first time I married my passion for photography with my creativity in the workshop, to develop a new device that would enable me to photograph animals in new ways. BeetleCam started me down a path which led me to develop a whole host of devices, many of which have been instrumental in my photography projects over the past 10 years. My camera trap devices have even become a business in their own right via Camtraptions.

I wanted to mark this anniversary with a look back at some of the adventures BeetleCam and I have shared to date. I trawled back through my old behind the scenes footage and have created this video, featuring lots of previously unseen material:

You can also look back through my past blog posts, which chronicle the evolution of BeetleCam and my journey as I have sought new ways to use it in my projects:
2009: The Adventures of BeetleCam
2011: BeetleCam vs the Lions of the Masai Mara
2012-13: September in South Luangwa / Luangwa Rains
2015: Wildlife at Night in Liuwa Plain
2017-18: Last photographs of the Elephant Queen

Last of her Kind

My most recent BeetleCam project resulted in my book “Land of Giants” which features around 50 BeetleCam images showing some of the most remarkable elephants on Earth. You can find out more about the book here.

I plan to create more short videos like the one above to share the stories behind my projects. If you are interested, you can subscribe to my YouTube channel here.
